How to Make Monster Popsicle Stick Bookmarks
I love popsicle stick crafts for kids because there are so many creative ways to use them. They are one of my go-to craft supplies so we always have some on hand.
These little monster sticks are perfect for crafting with your kids.
You could make these to give to your children or assist them with assembly. I definitely recommend adult supervision when making these.
What can you use for a bookmark?
I usually use a paper bookmark, but craft sticks work just as well. It's fun to get creative with easy bookmark ideas like making cute and silly monsters.
When you're done making these, let the kids put their new bookmark to use while reading one of these fall picture books.
Can kids use a glue gun?
First, let me say that I recommend adult supervision for most art and craft projects, even if they can complete the projects themselves.
I know some kids use glue guns with no problem, but this will depend on a few things besides their age, such as maturity and responsibility.
You will know best if your child can use a glue gun for this project.
You can assist them with hot gluing either by doing it as they design their monster or doing it together while teaching them how to use a glue gun.
My kids have not used my glue gun on their own, but my daughter is almost 9 years old now, and I'd let her use it on some projects while I supervise.
A low temp glue gun is a great choice, while it's still hot and they need to be careful, it's cooler than the temperature of a regular one one.
You may also find these glue gun finger protectors helpful for both you and your kids.
What can you use instead of hot glue?
If you do not feel comfortable using a hot glue gun with your children or allowing them to use it, I suggest using tacky craft glue instead.
I think hot glue bonds the materials in this project the best and makes it more durable for use as a bookmark.
However, you could try making these with tacky glue. It will need a longer drying time than hot glue, but is sturdier than regular white school glue.
Monster Bookmark Craft Supplies
- Large Craft Sticks – one for each bookmark
- Pom Poms in assorted colors
- Chenille Stems in assorted colors
- Googly Eyes in assorted sizes
- Washable Markers
- Low Temp Glue Gun and Glue Gun Sticks
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Glue gun finger protectors (optional)
Craft Stick Monster Bookmark Directions
I've also included printable instructions for these DIY bookmarks at the bottom of this post for you to print out.
Start by coloring all sides of the popsicle craft sticks with washable markers. Set them aside to dry.
To make the fuzzy monster head, carefully insert a sharpened pencil into a large pom pom to create a hole.
Then place a small amount of low temp glue on the chenille stem (aka pipe cleaner – I think I'll forever know them as pipe cleaners) and insert into pom pom.
While holding the pom pom at the top of the craft stick, wrap the chenille stem around three times. Clip remaining length of chenille stem with scissors and secure it in place with hot glue.
Continue creating monsters by attaching the remaining chenille stems, wiggly eyes and smaller pom poms with the glue gun.
Have fun with it by giving some of them three eyes that stick out above their head or just one eye.

Printable Monster Stick Bookmarks Craft Instructions
Materials
- Large Craft Sticks – one for each bookmark
- Pom Poms in assorted colors
- Chenille Stems in assorted colors
- Googly Eyes in assorted sizes
- Washable Markers
Instructions
- Color all sides of the craft sticks with washable markers. Set aside to dry.
- To make the monster's head, carefully insert sharpened pencil into large pom pom to create a hole.
- Place a small amount of low temp glue on chenille stem and insert into pom pom.
- Holding pom pom at top of craft stick, wrap chenille stem around three times. Clip remaining length of chenille stem with scissors and secure with hot glue.
- Add detail and create even more monsters by attaching the remaining chenille stems, wiggle eyes and smaller pom poms with the glue gun.
